THIS WILL BE MY LAST POST ABOUT THE EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA

Hello, everyone! This will be my last post on the subject of the earthquake in China. It is just too depressing for me to keep writing about. I'm pretty sure my previous posts have painted a clear picture of the devastation in China, and the grieving parents who are STRUGGLING to cope with the death of their sons and daughters. Please remember that for MOST of these parents, this was their ONLY child (due to the Chinese one-child policy). This policy has now sparked MUCH outrage by parents who, in their mid-50's, have lost their only child, and are too old to bear another child.

These candles are in the shape of the Chinese characters for "May 12"

The latest news reports the death toll has officially risen to 21,500 (most of these children). There are still thousands who are "missing" and unaccounted for. And, if the earthquake was not catastrophe enough to deal with, the aftershocks have started sparking landslides, burying everything in their path. Their have been riots reported in some areas of China due to the outrage of citizens trying to understand why so many schools collapsed during the earthquake (over 6,000 classrooms), killing most of the students who filled them. Hope for survivors is dimming.

The generosity of people who have donated to the Half the Sky Foundation/Global Giving has been overwhelming! As of this evening (7:30 p.m.) the total has risen to $136,050.

Please continue to keep these families in your prayers. They have suffered such great losses, and it is really hard to comprehend what they must be going through.
_________

While money cannot buy back what these families have lost, it can provide some necessities to the earthquake survivors. If you haven't already done so, PLEASE make a donation (whatever you can afford) to Half the Sky Foundation. Half the Sky Foundation is working very closely with the Chengdu Red Cross to make sure that these necessities are provided. Your donations will help provide antibiotics, medicine, bandages, gauze, tape, iodine, cotton swabs, herbal medicine to stop bleeding and some for pain relief, as well as tents, blankets, warm clothes, shoes and food.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO KEEP YANG LIU IN YOUR PRAYERS. THE LATEST NEWS REPORTS THAT SHE IS NOT DOING WELL. THIS IS THE LITTLE GIRL WHOSE LEGS HAD TO BE AMPUTATED IN ORDER TO REMOVE HER FROM THE DEBRIS.

Oh, Erin, those pictures are just AWFUL! And I hadn't thought about the one-child policy and how losing those children is the end for those families...makes me literally nauseous!

We got our "economic stimulus" money yesterday, and I'm sending a chunk of it to the Relief Fund. Thanks for opening everyone's eyes to the horrors of this disaster...I'm going to go hug my kids.
